Portland’s The Bylines exists in a unique musical plane, one at once grounded in the big-band past of jazz/pop performances and rooted in a present realm of intricate and catchy songwriting. The group is equally at home in velvet-curtained jazz halls, large rooms and intimate venues. As lovers of the American Songbook, they cover everything from Cole Porter to Adele, from Peggy Lee to Regina Spektor. As songwriters and alumni of the Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project, Reece Marshburn and Marianna Thielen’s original tunes are influenced by the writers and performers that have shaped popular music throughout the last century. You can find The Bylines all over the Northwest playing in jazz clubs, hotels, wine bars, events and galas for local institutions like OMSI and Raphael House. In addition, they have opened for Randy Newman at the Britt Festival, played in venues across the country from Los Angeles to New York City, and worked as entertainers onboard a cruise ship that set sail from Venice, Italy. In August of 2024 they made their debut at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, performing their original show This is What It’s For, as well as participating as street entertainers, serenading the visiting crowds on the Royal Mile.
